‘Above the fold’ – Myth busted

Check out this article on the Template Monster blog… It’s horribly written but raises an important point regarding mobile devices.

However, be aware that all this depends on the function of the page. If you have a sales page or squeeze page, the video and adjacent opt-in form where people enter their details is most effective when it is placed above the fold. Vital tag lines should also be placed above the fold. Using timed Java pop-ups however, it is not completely necessary to have the opt-in form ‘above the fold’.

Where is the fold? Well, when we build a sales page we typically place the most important information (tag line, video, opt-in form) within the first 500 – 700px from the top of the screen. This takes care of most portable devices (including netbooks) with small screen resolution.

If your web page is an informational page then the old ‘above the fold’ principles may not apply as visitors will need to scroll to view an entire article anyway.

However, there are many variables. Please consult your local online marketing guru for advice on effective page layout. Especially if you want to increase lead conversion or sales.
